what forgiveness is…and what it isn’t

My recent post about hardness of heart in marriage and the difficult work of marriage has raised a lot of questions on the issue of forgiveness. What exactly is forgiveness? I spent a number of years defining “forgiveness” incorrectly, and it had some fierce ramifications on relationships in my life. I once thought forgiveness was:…

First Day at Glorieta 🌄 We’ve always dreamed First Day at Glorieta 🌄

We’ve always dreamed of doing a family camp—and this summer, with it being Kate’s last one before college, we knew the time was now.

This video is from our first full day at Glorieta, and from the moment we arrived, we felt so welcomed.

The mountains took our breath away, the green fields felt like a deep exhale, and wildflowers lined the path like lovely little reminders of God’s grace, beauty and joy.

The staff greeted us with genuine kindness, helped us get checked in, and even gave us a welcome bag filled with snacks and a handwritten note.

Already our family is loving it here—and after tonight’s color war kickoff (yes, I wore a shower cap under my bandana to protect the hair 😄 (@austen.thelightcollective you’d be so proud of me for keeping my hair safe), we’re all in. The food has been great, the activities a blast and the devotional time so refreshing.

And yet, our hearts are still tethered to South Texas. The loss of so many young campers due to the recent flooding has left a deep ache. We are continuing to hold those families in our hearts this week as we step into this gift of time together—grateful, sobered, and present.

May we never take these moments for granted.
Every breath, every laugh, every mountain view… it’s all grace, none of it deserved.

As a mama just hearing that a child is missing is As a mama just hearing that a child is missing is enough to undo you. Because once you’ve held your own baby in your arms, you know.

You know the wild love.

The fear.

The desperate prayers.

The feeling of your heart walking around outside your body.

The loss of these families is all too much to bear.

The ache of not being able to protect them.

The breathless panic.

The helplessness when you’d do anything—anything—but can’t do a thing.

I cannot stop thinking of the moms and dads who are aching. Hurting. Longing.
I weep with them.

Lord, be near.
Wrap them in Your love.
O Jesus, hold them.
When the waters rise... I don’t have the right When the waters rise...

I don’t have the right words. I don’t think any of us do.

South Texas is reeling.

The rivers that once brought beauty, joy, relaxation, and life have now swallowed homes, shattered families, and stolen lives.

The floodwaters came fast—faster than anyone could have imagined. And in their wake, they’ve left heartbreak, sorrow and pain that words could not possibly mend.

You’ve likely seen the photos. The videos.

Maybe, like me, you keep refreshing the news, asking loved ones for updates, hoping for some glimmer of hope.

Maybe you’ve murmured prayers through tears for the families of Camp Mystic and the countless others who are grieving unthinkable loss.

It feels senseless. It feels wrong. It IS wrong.

And yet... even here, especially here, I believe God is near.

Not in some trite, “everything happens for a reason” way.

But in the way that the Man of Sorrows always draws close to the brokenhearted.

The way Jesus wept at the tomb of His friend.

The way Jesus knew the absence of the Father before taking his last breath.

The way the Spirit groans with us when words fail.

So what do we do?

Well, put simply…love refuses to look away.

We pray and we lament. We name the unspeakable pain. We grieve with those who grieve.

To all our neighbors and loved ones here in South Texas—we grieve together with you and we will bend the knee in prayer over you.

Heavenly Father,
God of all comfort,
We are heartbroken.
You see the pain—the kind no words can reach.
You are not far off. You are near.
You are the Man of Sorrows, familiar with grief.
You wept at the tomb of a friend. You welcome children into Your arms.
You enter the storm with us.

Lord, be near every parent whose arms ache,
every sibling trying to understand,
every family, friend, and neighbor stunned and shattered by loss.

You don’t rush our sorrow—but You do redeem it.
Hold these hurting hearts.
Speak peace where there is none.
Be breath when it’s hard to breathe.
Wrap this whole community in Your love.

Come, Lord Jesus.
Amen.
Happy 4th to you all! 🎇🇺🇸 Happy 4th to you all! 🎇🇺🇸
