why we began homeschooling

Last year was our first year of homeschooling. I really didn’t talk too much about it as the year went on, mainly because I was trying to keep my head above water and it wasn’t going well at all…but I managed to write one post about half way through to give an update after we…

keep it simple mama: our kids only need two things

I’ve never been good at gardening. Taking care of plants does not come naturally to me. What I really want is someone who understands the love language of nature to teach me what to do to keep my plants and flowers not just alive, but flourishing. It is easy to think that motherhood is like…

🌿 The great cause of a Christian’s distress, 🌿 The great cause of a Christian’s distress, the reason of the depths of sorrow into which many believers are plunged, is simply this — that while they are looking about, on the right hand and on the left, to see how they may escape their troubles, they forget to look to the hills whence all real help cometh; they do not say, “Where is God my Maker, who giveth songs in the night?”
-Spurgeon

It’s where we look for help.

Like Spurgeon said— we look to the right and to the left, scrambling for solutions, trying to find the quickest escape, trying to fix, to flee, to control.

And in all our looking around,
we forget to look up.

👉 “Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night?”

We forget that help doesn’t come from our plans, our striving, our perfect solutions.

Help comes from the Lord.

The One who meets us in the dark.

The One who gives us a song when we thought there could only be silence.

If you’re weary today—if you’ve been searching in every direction for relief— maybe the invitation is this:

Stop. Breathe. Look up.

Your help comes from the Maker of heaven and earth.
Day 4 at Glorieta: The Day I Jumped (Even Though I Day 4 at Glorieta: The Day I Jumped (Even Though I Was Terrified) 🛶🌊😭

The morning was filled with sunshine and summer: lake play, paddle boarding, fish-spotting, swimming, and a zip line that launched us right into the water. It was light and fun and memory-making at its finest.

But after lunch, things got a little more intense. We got harnessed up and headed to the 50-foot drop zipline.

And here’s something you may not know about me—I’m absolutely terrified of heights.

Always have been.

I was that little kid who’d climb all the way up the high dive, hold up the line for ten minutes, and then quietly climb back down the ladder in tears.

So standing at the edge of this platform, strapped in and staring down, I completely froze.

My throat tightened. My hands shook.

I started to cry.

Everything in me screamed, “You can’t do it.”

But Kai stayed with me.

My teenage son, steady and kind, didn’t mock or minimize. He didn’t rush me or roll his eyes.

He sat down next to me, talked me through my fear, looked me in the eyes, and counted me down.

And somehow… I jumped.

Not because I wasn’t afraid, but because someone was with me in it.

And maybe that’s the whole picture of courage—it’s not the absence of fear. It’s about choosing to move forward anyway, especially when someone we love believes in us.

When I got to the bottom, I was still crying… but this time it wasn’t from fear. It was because I had finally done something I never thought I could do.

I wonder how many of us are standing at the edge of something that feels too big to handle.

Too scary. Too vulnerable.

And yet—it’s the very thing that will move us toward growth, healing, forgiveness, hope, or purpose if we’re willing to leap.

Following Jesus is often like that. Risky, raw, and sometimes completely uncomfortable. And full of small moments that ask us to still do it scared.

This was just a zip line.

But it became a holy reminder:
To have courage.
To be brave.
To be led by love.
To not be too proud to let your kids teach you something new.

And to keep making time for what matters most.

Day 3 at Glorieta 📸🛴🌺🔥 We started the Day 3 at Glorieta 📸🛴🌺🔥

We started the day with breakfast and family photos—and with pink and purple flowers blooming everywhere and mountain views in every direction, it felt like we were stepping straight into a postcard.

After lunch, the big kids, Matt and I got to ride giant scooters down a mountain (and let’s just say… that may end up being their highlight of the week).

Then we cleaned up and dressed up for luau night! There was Italian ice, limbo, and laughter all around—but the real fun kicked off with the family relay competition.

Team PINK (that’s us 💗) gave it everything we had. Matt hit a bullseye in corn hole and memorized part of a book of the Bible, then passed the pool noodle baton to Canon, who leapt into the lake and climbed the lily pads.

Next was Kate and me—Kate blindfolded on a paddleboard while I guided her across the lake. She absolutely crushed it!

From there, it was one wild adventure after another: a race to the giant airbag jump, a speedy waterslide for Crew, a blob launch for Kai and Corban, and a full-on footrace (thanks to our track star, Kai!) to unscramble a Bible verse.

And… PINK TEAM WON! Our camp guide, Claire (who we adore), told us it was her first-ever family win!

We finished the night with s’mores around the fire, sticky fingers, and incredibly full hearts.

One thing we’ve loved about Glorieta is how it reminds us that loving one another doesn’t happen in a rush. Connecting as a family happens with slowing down, around campfires and among the pine trees. In shared laughs, team challenges, and intentional devotional time.

This is the kind of purposeful, joy-filled living we want more of. The kind that brings families together.

Thank you to Glorieta for creating such an incredible environment for families to connect.

Day 2 at Glorieta 🌲🎯🐰 We woke up to moun Day 2 at Glorieta 🌲🎯🐰

We woke up to mountain air and breakfast in NM Hall, then hopped on the red shuttle truck affectionately named Clifford to kick off the day. Archery and slingshots started us off strong (no one lost an eye—success!), followed by a hike, bunny snuggles, and stick races in the river.

From corn hole and connect four, to hammocks and water pumps, to ping pong and football in the commons… the kids were everywhere and loving every minute. Worship was one of my favorite parts of the day—open windows, mountain breezes, and voices singing truth into the warm summer air.

The teaching and family devo stirred up some beautiful conversations, and we began creating our family seal with string art (I LOVED this idea!)

Later, Matt and I had a sweet little date night, followed by fireside time for the guys and a painting class for the ladies. Dessert? A cherry crumble baked in cast iron skillets over the fire—yes, please.

And just when we thought the night was winding down, the “snow hill” surprised us all… not snow, but soap and sprinklers! We laughed, sledded, and squealed like little kids in the middle of July.

I can’t say enough about how intentional the Glorieta staff has been. Every detail is thought through—from the big things down to the tiniest touches.

This place makes rest easy for families. It’s simple and spacious, with something for every age—from babies to teens to adults.

So grateful for this sacred little slice of summer.
