the mattering things

I could hear the rumbling and wrestling upstairs after the dinner plates had been cleared. I could see this was as good of an opportunity as I would get….and I could feel the lump in my throat and the pit in my stomach knowing deep down he needed to hear the words my heart had…

Our Last Day at Glorieta 🥾🐰🌄🎻 The mor Our Last Day at Glorieta 🥾🐰🌄🎻

The morning started with a cowboy breakfast—biscuits and gravy, hot coffee brewed in a cast iron pot, the kind of slow, quiet start that makes you want to linger…for, say…forever…

We played horseshoes, tossed rings over bottles, climbed trees one last time, cuddled the bunnies again (because the girls just couldn’t stay away), rode mountain bikes, and hiked beneath the trees and skies almost too big to take in.

There was Bible study and another sweet date night.

This time a steak dinner, with some of the best corn bread I’ve ever had…and churros!!

A live violinist.
A sunset that made us all grab for our cameras and a group pic that had us all laughing at just how much fun we all had together.

The staff handed out thumb drives filled with captured memories handed out like little time capsules.

And then—dancing. The kind where no one holds back, and everyone is smiling

We ended the night with deep belly laughs, late-night conversations with new friends, and that good kind of tired where your soul feels full in the best ways.

And now, here I sit—wondering how I could possibly put into words what this week meant to our family.

Glorieta Family Camp was more than just a fun vacation.

It was intentional.

Thoughtfully crafted.

The best kind of good.

From our five-year-old to our 19-year-old (and yes, even us grown-ups), every single person in our family was seen, valued, and delighted in.

There was something here for each of us—adventure, beauty, worship, rest, fun, and space to be together.

And I can’t say enough about the staff. Every detail was considered. Every need anticipated. It wasn’t just camp—it was a gift.

A place that reminded us who we are, what matters most, and how beautiful life can be when we slow down and connect with one another again.

If you’ve been looking for a meaningful way to invest in your family… this is it.

And if you book before December 5th, use code: MMW at checkout for 10% off.

Trust me—you’ll walk away with more than a memory.

You’ll walk away changed.

This one’s a long video… because it was a long This one’s a long video… because it was a long day! And I wouldn’t change a single second. 💪🌄🦸‍♀️🍦

We started early and ended late—this day was full in every way.

After sailing through the trees on the High Five, we played mini golf, soaked up a lunch devotional, and then dressed up for Superhero Night—where I may or may not have accidentally bought toddler-sized capes. 😂

Thankfully, the kids owned them anyway and made it even more fun!

We joined the camp-wide scavenger hunt, and it was epic. Each kid took on their own challenge—puzzles, riddles, memorization, zip-lining, sledding, rock climbing, crawling through mud, and even getting dunked at the very end (Kate was such a good sport!).

We wrapped up the night with an ice cream party and another round of heights—zip lining off a building at night. I even went back to the zip drop. I could feel the panic rise again, but this time Kate was with me. She saw it in my eyes (and my panicked pacing!) coached me through it—-and I walked straight off the edge with her. No kneeling. No sitting. No tears.

And I realized something:
I can do hard things.
I am doing hard things.

I’ve spent most of my life terrified of two things: heights and public speaking.

And this year? I’ve faced both.
More speaking than ever before.
More jumps than I can count.

I’m certainly not fearless—but I’m learning what real courage is: doing it with the fear, not waiting for it to disappear (my little girls would be so proud of my for rhyming!)

My kids humble me every day. They cheer me on. They speak life. They teach me what it looks like to rise.

So I want to ask you…
What are you afraid of? Is there anything that just gets to you??

What leap is in front of you?

What voices are you listening to?

This trip reminded me that sometimes the fear stays, and sometimes it’s fierce. But when you’re surrounded by people who love you, remind you who you are, and walk with you through it—it becomes possible to do what once felt completely impossible.

Our Favorite Moment at Glorieta 🌿🕊️🌅 A Our Favorite Moment at Glorieta 🌿🕊️🌅

A week full of wild adventure—mountain scooters, zip lines, lake swims, themed nights, and s’mores by the fire—there was one moment that stood out above the rest.

It was sacred. It was still.

On our 4th night there, we walked together through the Prayer Garden. Littered with flowers—-worship music filling the air—-a path that guided us from one station to the next, each designed to help us pause, reflect, and draw near to God and one another.

At one station, we took a moment to encourage each other and create sand art to symbolize the unique value of each person in our family.

At another, we painted blue over a beautiful image as a way of confessing sin—offering one another grace, forgiveness, and a fresh beginning.

At another station we wrote down the kind of family we want to be… and chose one phrase from the camp guide that reflects what we live by.

For us, that was easy: “Pass out flowers.”

If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know this one well. It’s our way of saying that no matter how we’re treated, no matter how bad the circumstances, we will choose to be who God made us to be.

We choose love.

We choose forgiveness. Kindness. Grace. Compassion.

We pass out flowers. Not because it’s easy, but because it’s who He calls us to be.

At the final station, we prayed together and took communion as a family.

By then, the sun had slipped behind the mountains. The music played softly, and I felt the weight and wonder of the moment sink deep.

Yes, the games have been fun. The lake and jumping off platforms was amazing. The laughter unforgettable.

But this?

This is what we’ll remember most.

Confession. Repentance. Encouragement. Worship. Communion.

Setting our hearts again on what truly matters.

If you’ve ever considered Glorieta Family Camp, let this be your nudge. It’s more than just a vacation—it’s a chance to connect, reset, and anchor your family in what lasts forever.

🌿 The great cause of a Christian’s distress, 🌿 The great cause of a Christian’s distress, the reason of the depths of sorrow into which many believers are plunged, is simply this — that while they are looking about, on the right hand and on the left, to see how they may escape their troubles, they forget to look to the hills whence all real help cometh; they do not say, “Where is God my Maker, who giveth songs in the night?”
-Spurgeon

It’s where we look for help.

Like Spurgeon said— we look to the right and to the left, scrambling for solutions, trying to find the quickest escape, trying to fix, to flee, to control.

And in all our looking around,
we forget to look up.

👉 “Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night?”

We forget that help doesn’t come from our plans, our striving, our perfect solutions.

Help comes from the Lord.

The One who meets us in the dark.

The One who gives us a song when we thought there could only be silence.

If you’re weary today—if you’ve been searching in every direction for relief— maybe the invitation is this:

Stop. Breathe. Look up.

Your help comes from the Maker of heaven and earth.
