Monterey Hotel and real life

This past weekend Matt and I got to get away together. His mom flew out to help watch three of the kids and two of them went to my brother and sister-in-law’s house. We love that they are willing to help us out and all of the kids had a great time. Even though I’m…

why reading comprehension (and tostadas) is critical for life

I read this “selection” to my first grader this morning: See the tree. The tree is a home. What can live in the house? See what lives here. It is for a raccoon. Raccoons can live in trees. The raccoon can go in. It can go out to get food. It gets corn and fish…

When someone you love is hurting—really hurting—it’s hard to know what to say.

You want to show up, but you don’t want to say the wrong thing.

So sometimes, out of fear or discomfort, we say too much.

Other times, we stay quiet, unsure if we’ll make it worse.

But here’s the truth: no one needs you to have all the right words. They just need to know they’re not alone.

Say: • “I’m here.” • “I hate this for you.” • “I made extra soup and I’m bringing it over—hope that’s okay.” • “I love you.” • “I don’t know what to say, but I’m staying.” • “I’m going to walk this with you.”

Don’t say: • “Everything happens for a reason.” • “At least it’s not worse.” • “You’ve got this” (sometimes they really don’t feel like they do). • “God won’t give you more than you can handle.” (Not only untrue—and is not at all Biblical—but it can also feel crushing.)

Pain doesn’t need to be explained away. Grief doesn’t need to be cleaned up. Presence isn’t small. It’s sacred.

Sometimes the most healing thing we can offer is our silence and our nearness.
Not answers, not solutions. Just our unhurried, undistracted presence.

Because in the end, that’s how God comes close to us too—Immanuel. God with us.
And sometimes the most Christlike thing we can do… is be with.
Courage begets courage.

It always has.

Because true courage is contagious—not in a flashy, stage-lit, superhero kind of way, but in the quieter kind that whispers, “If they can trust God in that... maybe I can too.”

Think of Jonathan’s armor bearer. No voice from heaven. No burning bush. Just the simple, steady confidence to say, “Do all that you have in mind. I am with you heart and soul.” (1 Samuel 14:7)

That one act of borrowed bravery helped spark a battle victory.

Or Ruth—likely weak in the knees, future unknown—who clung to Naomi and declared, “Where you go I will go… your God will be my God.” Her courage rippled through generations, ultimately leading to the birth of Christ Himself.

And isn’t that what courage does?

It doesn’t always roar. It’s rarely loud.

It’s often the size of a mustard seed.
Yet...sometimes courage is simply refusing to leave.

Sometimes courage is staying.

Sometimes courage is leaving.

Sometimes courage is just showing up again.

Every act of courage becomes an invitation—Come. See. Trust. Dare to believe that God is who He says He is.

When Peter stepped out of the boat, Jesus’ voice beckoned him—but can’t you imagine the others watching wide-eyed? Wondering if the impossible might be possible for them, too?

Courage begets courage.

Because faith has a way of igniting faith.

And one soul on fire for the Lord might be the match that lights a generation.

So go first if you must.

Tremble as you do.

But go anyway.

Because when you dare to obey God in full view of others…
you just might awaken the courage in them to do the same.
“Little girl, I say to you, arise.” (Mark 5 “Little girl, I say to you, arise.”
(Mark 5:41)

Not for applause.
Not for revenge.
Not even to explain what just happened.

Just… arise.

Because when Jesus speaks,
life begins again.

He takes her hand—tenderly, intentionally—
and calls her back to her feet.

Not because she earned it.
Not because she was ready.
But because He said so.

Some days, that’s all we have.
Not clarity.
Not a plan.
Just His voice, saying:
“Get up. It’s time to rise.”

Not to be impressive.
Not to prove a point.
Just to walk in the life He’s speaking over us.

So today, maybe you don’t need more advice.
Or more answers.

Maybe you just need the reminder that Jesus still speaks to weary hearts,
tired bodies, to willing hearts…
and to dreams that feel long dead—

“Arise.”

Not for gain.
Not for validation.
But because He called you.

And that’s reason enough. Lean in…incline your ear…what’s He saying to you today…
“Did God really say…?” It’s the first que “Did God really say…?”

It’s the first question the enemy ever asked.
And it’s the one that still echoes through the hearts of God’s people today.

We live in a world of extremes when it comes to hearing God’s voice.

Some of us dismiss the idea entirely—too uncertain, too mysterious, too risky.

We don’t want to get it wrong, so we just… don’t listen.

Or maybe we stopped listening because the silence was too long.

Then there are others who go chasing whispers in every cloud shape, every coincidence, every feeling, every passing thought.

We baptize our impulses in spiritual language and blame the Holy Spirit for decisions we were already set on making.

But here’s the thing:
The voice of the Lord is not a magic trick or a parlor game.

It’s not vague. It’s not manic. It’s not ego-drenched.

It’s holy.

It’s district.

And you cannot separate the voice of the Spirit from the character of the Father,
as revealed in the Person of Jesus Christ.

If the “word” you’re hearing doesn’t look like Jesus—
doesn’t carry His mercy, His truth, His love, His humility—
then it isn’t His voice.

Because the God who speaks is the same God who came.

And the more you know Him,
the easier it becomes to recognize His voice.

So before we seek a voice, let’s seek His face.

Let’s saturate ourselves in Scripture.

Let’s wait in stillness. Pause to pray.

Let’s test every whisper against the Word.

And let’s remember:
God doesn’t play hide and seek with His children.

He loves to speak.
But even more than that—

He loves to be known.
