WHERE IS GOD WHEN WE SUFFER?

Just this weekend we had both our littlest girls throwing up. The first, from carsickness, the second from some sort of stomach bug. For the first we stopped the car, got her cleaned up, put on new clothes and got her some air. We rested until she felt stable, rubbed her back, pulled her hair…

Halloween/Fall 2023

Every year we have tried to do some kind of theme dress up as a family. We’ve actually done Peter Pan before back in 2012 when I was pregnant with our fifth kiddo, but that night turned into a disaster as we had to rush Kai to the emergency room! He was so little! And…

I was reading today in John 15 about abiding. And I was reading today in John 15 about abiding. And I wanted to share this thought with you: Abiding in Christ isn’t just a sweet idea—it’s the very lifeline of our faith. 🌿

To abide means more than a passing thought about God in the middle of a busy day. It is a continual connection…a deliberate choice to remain close…a steady dependence like a child to its mother.

Jesus says, “Abide in me, and I in you” (John 15:4). This is not one-sided. It’s a mutual relationship—His life in us, and us choosing to stay rooted in Him.

Left on its own, a vine will grow wild. It will look full and green from the outside, but without careful tending, it produces little fruit. Lots of leaves, lots of tangled shoots…yet nothing that nourishes.

A good vinedresser knows where to cut. He prunes what’s unproductive so that all the nutrients flow into what actually matters. The purpose of the vine isn’t appearance—it’s fruit. 🍇

And the fruit Jesus is after is not temporary achievements or outward success. It’s an inward transformation.

It looks like Galatians 5:22—love when it would be easier to resent, joy in the middle of hardship, peace when everything feels uncertain, patience when the wait is long, kindness when the world feels cruel, goodness in the unseen places, faithfulness when no one applauds, gentleness in the face of harshness, and self-control when everything in us wants to give in.

That is the outcome of abiding. Not striving. Not proving.

Not trying to muster up some sort of spiritual energy we don’t have.

Just remaining.

Just staying connected to the Vine that gives life.

And yes—pruning hurts.

Sometimes God removes things we thought we needed.

Sometimes He cuts back what we thought was growth.

But His purpose is never harm. His hands are steady and in His eyes we find love and genuine kindness. He prunes so that more fruit can flourish.

What might change if you stopped striving to look fruitful, and simply chose to remain in Christ, letting Him grow what truly lasts?

The first week back is always the hardest. It’s The first week back is always the hardest. It’s awkward, it’s uncomfortable, and honestly—I’d rather quit before I even start. But here’s the truth: when I take care of myself, it blesses everyone around me.

So here’s the plan I’m stepping into this fall:
💪 Heavy lifting 5x/week (using the @1stphorm app—DM me if you want to do the same plan!)
🚴 30 min HIIT cycling daily for faster fat burn
🚶‍♀️ 10k steps/day (weighted vest when I can)
🥩 Prioritizing protein (1g per lb of goal weight) + clean, whole foods
💧 ½–1 gallon of water daily
🌙 7–9 hrs sleep, nightly reading & writing
🌿 Daily vitamins + Primal Queen beef liver (for hormones & energy)
🧹 No alcohol, no processed sugar, no screens before bed, no junk in my house

Why all this?

Because I want to feel strong, energized, clear-headed, and fully present. I want to serve my family and others with everything I’ve got. And I know that when I care well for myself, it overflows into every corner of my life.

Here’s to showing up fully—body, mind, and soul. ✨

This week we’ve had so many conversations as a f This week we’ve had so many conversations as a family. With one in college, one in kinder, and every stage in between… it feels like the full spectrum of life is all happening in our house at once.

The school year just started, and already the overwhelm is setting in. Early mornings, packed schedules, hard conversations. Even the possibility of a change of major two weeks into college classes—and all the emotions, second guessing and adjustments that can bring.

It’s so easy in a season like this to just put our heads down and do the work. To let the pace and the pressure set the tone.

And yet… the Lord keeps reminding us all to think bigger than our current circumstances.

When school starts, it’s often harder to find those long, quiet hours with Him. We can miss the lazy, slower mornings of summer and feel guilty that “real life” makes deep stillness feel impossible. But maybe this season isn’t meant to look the same.

Sometimes, time with God looks like sitting at a feast—like Thanksgiving or Christmas—where we linger long, savoring every word. Other times, it’s more like grazing a buffet—little bites here and there, spread throughout the day.

And yet both satisfy. Both nourish. Both still fill us up.

Maybe you’re already feeling the weight of this new season too—the busyness, the overwhelm, the pressure to keep up. Can I just remind you? Don’t lose sight of what matters most.

Feast on the Lord all day long. Take small bites of His presence, of His word, as you go. Let Him speak, direct, correct, and encourage you—pause as you go for His word, his encouragement, His leading.

Because life isn’t merely about everything getting done.

It’s that our eyes stay fixed—laser-focused—on Him.

I want to encourage you this week to listen for that still small Voice as you go. In the pick up line, as you’re making lunches, as you’re packing up sports bags, as you’re cooking dinner. Pause, speak with Him, recognize His nearness, and ask Him to help you keep your focus on the essential.

“He makes known to me the path of life; in His presence there is fullness of joy; at His right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11)
