Real compassion takes work. A lot of it. Real compassion takes work.

A lot of it.

You can’t fake it with a quick emoji or a comment that sounds empathetic but costs you nothing.
You can’t merely send a Bible verse, or a quick catch phrase, and move on.
You can’t show up only when it’s convenient, comfortable, and well-lit.

No, real compassion is inconvenient.
It lingers when things get awkward.
It leans in when everyone else leans out.
It listens longer than it wants to,
asks questions instead of assuming answers,
and stays at the table when every instinct says,
“You don’t owe them anything.”

Because compassion isn’t just a feeling.
It’s a choice.

Just like love, because compassion IS love.

Love is a costly choice.

It costs time.
It costs comfort.
Sometimes it costs your pride.

But it’s the kind of cost Jesus never flinched at.

He knelt in the dirt beside the woman caught in adultery.
He wept with grieving sisters.
He touched the leper.
He drew near to the sick, the blind, the lame.
He forgave the ones crucifying Him.

Love didn’t just move Him emotionally.
It moved Him physically—toward pain, toward…people.

And if we’re following Him,
it will move us too.

Live the kind of Love that costs something. live the kind of Love that makes others confused.

That’s the kind that changes the world.

There’s a line I keep circling back to: " There’s a line I keep circling back to:

"A theology that gives rise to a spirituality, which nobody can live out, is a highly suspect theology, however good its biblical, traditional, and logical credentials may claim to be.”
(Fred Sanders, Jesus in Trinitarian Perspective, pg. 11)

Here’s the thing—
we can read the Bible, memorize verses, know the Greek and Hebrew, and still completely miss the point.
Because the aim of theology is not simply to think rightly about God—
it’s to live rightly with Him, and with others.

Jesus didn’t say, “You’ll be known by your well-crafted statements.”
He said, “You’ll be known by your love.”
(John 13:35)

Jesus never invited us into a faith that stays in theory.
He invites us to live what we believe—
in the way we speak to our families,
in how we forgive,
in how we serve,
in how we trust Him in the ordinary and the unseen.

Real theology produces a real way of life.
It shows up in the kitchen and in the carpool line,
on our kids' sports teams,
in how we love, forgive, and endure.

It doesn’t just inform our thoughts;
it forms our character.

Maybe today is a good day to ask:
Where has your faith stayed in the mind—
admired, elevated, but not practiced?

Where might the Lord be inviting you to let it become real?

Faith that stays in our heads will never transform the world.
But faith that is lived—boldly, consistently, daily...

will.
A few weeks ago, I went to visit my daughter, Kate A few weeks ago, I went to visit my daughter, Kate, at TCU for parents weekend. We skipped the planned festivities because that same weekend we attended a funeral.

A beloved ballet faculty member—also a pastor’s wife for over 20 years—passed away the very day Charlie Kirk was killed.

At her funeral the room was packed. Standing room only. While the world was grieving the loss of a superstar, this community was also grieving their own.

I didn’t know her personally, but I was deeply moved hearing story after story about the way she lived—faithful, kind, intentional. She loved the Lord and she loved people well. Her life made a real difference in this world.

And then to leave that sacred space and step back into the online poison surrounding Charlie’s death… my heart broke all over again.

Something in me significantly shifted that weekend.
Whatever fear of man was still lingering in me was stripped away.

As the Psalmist says,

“The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
—Hebrews 13:6

I don’t want to stall or sit on the sidelines anymore. I want to love the place God has planted me—even the one I never expected to call home. I want to see families reconciled, neighbors united, truth proclaimed, evil exposed and Jesus Christ worshiped!

So next Sunday, October 12 at 5:30 pm, at Bird Haus Farms, we’re gathering to do just that: worship.

It’s family-style—bring your picnic blankets, bring food if you’d like, and come ready. Come expectant.

My dear friend Marla Barnard-Grub will lead worship with her husband and friends from King’s Porch.

The table is set.
The invitation is here.

Come.
Pray.
Ask the Holy Spirit to move mightily in power.

Lord Jesus, we welcome You here.
Wake sleeping souls.
Set us on FIRE for the things that matter most.
Bring revival to this land.

The time is now!
The answer to hate is always love. Always. I c The answer to hate is always love.

Always.

I can testify to this truth from my own life as well. When I choose anger/bitterness I drink a poison that harms myself and others around me. When I choose forgiveness I drink deeply of grace, which radically transforms me and others around me too.

The answer to hatred is to respond with love, active love.

Active love means our love must be genuine. We must abhor what is evil—we must not participate in that evil. We just cannot.

Instead we must hold fast to all that is good. We must be zealous and fervent in seeking the Lord.

There is suffering everywhere, in big ways and small, but it is never letting up…and we must continue to be patient in all tribulation, and remain strong and steadfast in prayer.

Can we please lay down our weapons? Can we please choose unity instead?

Yesterday we spent time together as a family yet again praying for our enemies too. We chose to bless those who persecute. Bless those who seek to destroy. Bless those who have taken from us, mocked and lied about us. This is real for us all.

I plead with you too, to bless those who have harmed, those who have walked away, those who have casted aside. Bless those who have rejected, tormented, betrayed and caused insurmountable pain. Lord Jesus bless them!

Who is it for you? Who is it that comes to mind? The one you struggle and wrestle with hatred for? Who is it?

Name that person. Speak their name, read Romans 12 and bless them! Pray mercy over them!

The reality is this world is not all there is, and the same advice given by Usha Vance is the same for us all—the last “15 minutes” we have left in this world is here. It’s now! And the time is now to live for Christ. Run this race hard. Survive it. Live it. Proclaim it.

The world will not know we are His because of our t-shirts. They will see the very face of God through us by our LOVE for one another.

The end is near…and this light and momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond ALL comparison. Partake in that now.

Look to the unseen. Look to what is lovely. Live for what is true.

And by all means, choose love.
