Christmas 2015

This past August we took our family of 7 on a two week road trip half way across the country in a borrowed RV to visit friends and family. It was a BIG deal and we had NO intention at all of going back for Christmas…but plans changed at the very last minute and we…

Perceived Perfection

Someone recently told my sister-in-law, after solely viewing the home page of my blog, that she would never read my blog because my “photos were too good and too perfect.” She went on to say that she refused to put herself up under that kind of condemnation every day because she only has one child…

Taking seriously the role to instruct and train is of utmost importance. Hopefully you read Part 1 in regards to training and the thoughts/motives behind it.  If I’m honest I…

The first time I thought of the phrase “pass out The first time I thought of the phrase “pass out flowers,”
I was in the middle of a prayer time—
wrestling with what it meant to forgive people who had hurt me deeply.

I didn’t feel loving. I didn’t feel free.
I felt angry. Bitter. Wounded.

In that stillness, the Lord met me.
And He gently replaced the weight of resentment with three unexpected words:
pass out flowers.

It felt too simple at first.
But within moments, I immediately realized what it meant.

Forgiveness.
Compassion.
Kindness.
Love.

And the clear, Spirit-led invitation to scatter them freely wherever I go. Like confetti. Like candy. And to keep passing them out no matter the outcome.

Passing out flowers isn’t just a gift to others.
It’s a gift to us.

Every time we choose love over pride,
kindness over retaliation,
compassion over offense—
something shifts in us.

Galatians 5 calls it fruit.

Not the kind we perform or force,
but the kind that grows as we walk with the Spirit:

Love. Joy. Peace. Patience. Kindness. Goodness. Faithfulness. Gentleness. Self-control.

Passing out flowers is what it looks like when the Spirit has done holy work in the soil of our hearts.

It’s choosing not to take offense—
even when offense is offered to us.

It’s choosing grace,
not because people earned it,
but because Christ gave it freely.

It’s loving others more than we love being right.
More than we love being understood.
More than we love protecting our own name.

Yes, it costs us.
But strangely—beautifully—
it also frees us.

Because this kind of love doesn’t just heal the people around us.
It heals us, too.

It doesn’t just bring beauty to those around us. It creates beauty in us too.

It softens what bitterness hardened.
It lightens what anger weighed down.
It reminds us that we don’t just follow Jesus with our beliefs—
we follow Him with how we love.

So pass out flowers. And don’t ever stop.

Even if they’re rejected.
Even if no one says thank you.
Even if you never see what grows.

Because this kind of love always leaves a fragrance.

And without a sermon or a spotlight, the Spirit will do what He always does—point hearts back to Jesus.
When someone you love is hurting—really hurting—it’s hard to know what to say.

You want to show up, but you don’t want to say the wrong thing.

So sometimes, out of fear or discomfort, we say too much.

Other times, we stay quiet, unsure if we’ll make it worse.

But here’s the truth: no one needs you to have all the right words. They just need to know they’re not alone.

Say: • “I’m here.” • “I hate this for you.” • “I made extra soup and I’m bringing it over—hope that’s okay.” • “I love you.” • “I don’t know what to say, but I’m staying.” • “I’m going to walk this with you.”

Don’t say: • “Everything happens for a reason.” • “At least it’s not worse.” • “You’ve got this” (sometimes they really don’t feel like they do). • “God won’t give you more than you can handle.” (Not only untrue—and is not at all Biblical—but it can also feel crushing.)

Pain doesn’t need to be explained away. Grief doesn’t need to be cleaned up. Presence isn’t small. It’s sacred.

Sometimes the most healing thing we can offer is our silence and our nearness.
Not answers, not solutions. Just our unhurried, undistracted presence.

Because in the end, that’s how God comes close to us too—Immanuel. God with us.
And sometimes the most Christlike thing we can do… is be with.
Courage begets courage.

It always has.

Because true courage is contagious—not in a flashy, stage-lit, superhero kind of way, but in the quieter kind that whispers, “If they can trust God in that... maybe I can too.”

Think of Jonathan’s armor bearer. No voice from heaven. No burning bush. Just the simple, steady confidence to say, “Do all that you have in mind. I am with you heart and soul.” (1 Samuel 14:7)

That one act of borrowed bravery helped spark a battle victory.

Or Ruth—likely weak in the knees, future unknown—who clung to Naomi and declared, “Where you go I will go… your God will be my God.” Her courage rippled through generations, ultimately leading to the birth of Christ Himself.

And isn’t that what courage does?

It doesn’t always roar. It’s rarely loud.

It’s often the size of a mustard seed.
Yet...sometimes courage is simply refusing to leave.

Sometimes courage is staying.

Sometimes courage is leaving.

Sometimes courage is just showing up again.

Every act of courage becomes an invitation—Come. See. Trust. Dare to believe that God is who He says He is.

When Peter stepped out of the boat, Jesus’ voice beckoned him—but can’t you imagine the others watching wide-eyed? Wondering if the impossible might be possible for them, too?

Courage begets courage.

Because faith has a way of igniting faith.

And one soul on fire for the Lord might be the match that lights a generation.

So go first if you must.

Tremble as you do.

But go anyway.

Because when you dare to obey God in full view of others…
you just might awaken the courage in them to do the same.
“Little girl, I say to you, arise.” (Mark 5 “Little girl, I say to you, arise.”
(Mark 5:41)

Not for applause.
Not for revenge.
Not even to explain what just happened.

Just… arise.

Because when Jesus speaks,
life begins again.

He takes her hand—tenderly, intentionally—
and calls her back to her feet.

Not because she earned it.
Not because she was ready.
But because He said so.

Some days, that’s all we have.
Not clarity.
Not a plan.
Just His voice, saying:
“Get up. It’s time to rise.”

Not to be impressive.
Not to prove a point.
Just to walk in the life He’s speaking over us.

So today, maybe you don’t need more advice.
Or more answers.

Maybe you just need the reminder that Jesus still speaks to weary hearts,
tired bodies, to willing hearts…
and to dreams that feel long dead—

“Arise.”

Not for gain.
Not for validation.
But because He called you.

And that’s reason enough. Lean in…incline your ear…what’s He saying to you today…
