I remember one night in the thick of our trauma ba I remember one night in the thick of our trauma back in 2021—a night that felt darker than all the rest. The weight of the darkness pressed down on me, suffocating and unrelenting, like it was alive and intent on crushing every bit of hope left in me. ⁠ ⁠ It wasn’t just the absence of light—it was the presence of fear, despair, and a silence so loud it screamed. ⁠ ⁠ It was if I had been swallowed whole, like Jonah, the darkness had closed in, with no way out and no promise of dawn. ⁠ ⁠ My feelings whispered lies that the darkness was stronger, that it was final, and that no light could ever break through. I couldn’t see, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t believe. ⁠ ⁠ I imagine God’s people felt something similar between the time of the prophet Malachi and the coming of Jesus. Malachi prophesied of the coming Messiah...but then God went dark.⁠ ⁠ For 400 years, they waited—FOUR HUNDRED YEARS! They waited in darkness, likely feeling abandoned. The silence palpable and deafening. ⁠ ⁠ Sometimes, the darkness presses in so heavily it feels like it’s all there is, blinding you to anything but its shadow.⁠ ⁠ ⁠ But here’s the truth: the darkness serves a purpose because it becomes our tutor. In the darkest of nights, we learn to find a song. A song that silences fear, crushes despair, and fills the dark places with light. ⁠ ⁠ A song that declares hope, faith, and joy—all rising—right out of the darkness. It cuts through, shedding light to the soul and bringing sight to the blind.⁠ ⁠ Your praise offered up in the darkness is powerful. So powerful death cannot contain it. ⁠ ⁠ No matter your circumstances or feelings, lift your voice anyway, knowing He is near, and victory is already His.⁠ ⁠ So today, let’s sing…not in the absence of the darkness, but right in the middle of it. 
Not because it’s easy, or it even makes sense, or because anything is fixed...but because our God is faithful and secure and sure.

When my siblings and I used to run cross-country, When my siblings and I used to run cross-country, my dad would always yell out the phrase, “Keep checking.” That meant that we needed to do a quick scan to make sure we weren’t exerting any unnecessary energy and to make sure we were pacing ourselves correctly.⁠ ⁠ I see that now as one of life’s greatest lessons...to constantly keep checking to make sure we are not just floating through life but are living with purpose and intentionality. ⁠ ⁠ For me, this continual “checking” has helped me look at my life from a Birds Eye view and to evaluate how and what I give myself to as I think of my last day, not just today.⁠ ⁠ I am constantly being challenged to let go of little things and to press into the most important things, to think of what is pure and good and lovely.⁠ ⁠ This constant checking has become something I celebrate and look forward to, especially as one year closes out and another begins. ⁠ ⁠ It’s about faithfulness, tenacity, gratitude, and the steadfast pursuit of keeping first things first. ⁠ ⁠ It’s showing up with my whole heart in the places God has planted me, being content in and out of all seasons and all circumstances, and constantly resetting to make my life revolve around what matters most:

⁠ ⁠ 🙏 Walking closely with Jesus, trusting Him, and connecting with Him in all seasons. ⁠ ⁠ 💛 Loving others deeply, genuinely and intentionally.⁠ ⁠ 💪 Staying strong and healthy to keep showing up for those I love with energy and joy.
⁠ ⁠ 🌸 Using all that I am to bring beauty, joy, and encouragement to the people around me.⁠ ⁠ It’s not about achieving, consuming, or striving after the meaningless. It’s about faithfully building a life that reflects what truly matters and helping you do the same.⁠ ⁠ We are coming to the end of another year…and I want to challenge you to take a moment to look back over the past 12 months and “keep checking.” ⁠ ⁠ What needs to go? What needs to be added? What must become the priority?
