One of my favorite stories of all time...one that helps us to take a step back and consider the end from the beginning...A Christmas Carol. ⁠

In it the character of Marley’s ghost warns Scrooge of a sobering truth:⁠
“But you were always a good man of business, Jacob,” faltered Scrooge, who now began to apply this to himself.⁠

“Business!” cried the ghost, wringing its hands again. “Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence were all my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!”⁠

It wasn’t profits or productivity that mattered most—it was people.⁠

Just in case no one has told you yet... pre-teens

Just in case no one has told you yet... pre-teens and teens are a lot of fun. Late-night conversations, inside jokes, discussions about feelings, ideas, the Gospel, friendships, and the things they’re learning.

Plans for the future, dreams that feel big and oh-so real, and the privilege of watching their hearts wrestle with truth and grow physically, emotionally, and spiritually right before your eyes.

It’s something so beautiful I never could have imagined.

Sure, there are challenges, but that’s not what I choose to focus on—in this space…or in our home. The incredible people they’re becoming is astounding, and that’s worth celebrating and highlighting.

You get to be their biggest cheerleader, their safe place, and the one who sees the best in them—right by their side as they figure it all out.

When they let you into their world, you’ll see a tiny glimpse of the seeds you planted long, long ago—the things you’ve been trying to teach and attempting to instill through years stacked on years—are finally bearing fruit.

It is a treasure, a ripening harvest, one your heart won’t quite know how to process…

because you’ll simultaneously want to rewind time and make it all go backward.

But you’ll also want to freeze time and keep everything just as it is because you’ll see just how fleeting it all is and want to hold onto them with every part of your soul.

And yet you’ll also want to fast-forward and peek into the future to see just who it is they will end up becoming!

As a mama to seven, with all sorts of ages shared in very small spaces, I want to encourage you to press in and lean in, especially on the hard days.

Laugh with them.

Build memories.

Hear their stories.

Stay up late when they want to talk because, with teens, you don’t get to decide when they are ready to open up. When they are, don’t let the moment pass.

Listen intently, especially when they’re quiet, because so much is being spoken from the heart that goes far beyond what words come out of their mouths.

And pray like your life and theirs depend on it.

Because they do.

For all of you younger mamas, I tell you the truth: you have a lot to look forward to. 💕
