why reading comprehension (and tostadas) is critical for life

I read this “selection” to my first grader this morning: See the tree. The tree is a home. What can live in the house? See what lives here. It is for a raccoon. Raccoons can live in trees. The raccoon can go in. It can go out to get food. It gets corn and fish…

Our day was amazing! We made pumpkin pancakes with turkey bacon and opened up Halloween presents from the grandparents! Then we got all ready in our costumes and spent the day at Disney! There’s just something so magical about the park when it’s a holiday season! Getting to go on the Pirates ride dressed as…

pumpkin carving party and 12 things

This past weekend we had our family fall party. We make the effort to do something special together for most holidays, even if it means just hanging out together on our back patio. We made chocolate, Reese’s PB cup, and Oreo popcorn, drank apple cider, and listened to music while we carved our pumpkins….

frosted pumpkin cream cheese cookies

My son, after making these cookies, said, “Mom, I think every single family should try these. They’re my favorite ever!” I’m not sure what holiday traditions you have, but when it comes to dinner menu for Thanksgiving we tend to do things pretty much the same every year around here. Every now and then someone…

difficult friendships and good confrontation

A few months ago I tried to speak with a friend about something troubling my heart. I felt a wedge growing between us and didn’t want it to be there. Maybe it was on my end, maybe it was on hers. Maybe it was both. Finding out seemed to be the most loving thing I…

There’s a tender term shepherds use for a lamb t There’s a tender term shepherds use for a lamb that’s been rejected by its mother:
a “bummer lamb”.

It’s not that the lamb did something wrong—
maybe the mother died in childbirth.
Maybe she simply rejected it.
Maybe she didn’t have the capacity to care.

Regardless of the reason,
the result is always the same:
the lamb is left alone,
wandering,
crying out for a voice it doesn’t recognize,
searching for a place it can’t quite name.

But here’s the part that gets me:

A good shepherd never leaves a bummer lamb to suffer.
He brings it into his home.
Feeds it from a bottle.
Holds it close to his chest so it can hear his heartbeat.
Sleeps beside it through the dark of night.

And over time—
slowly, softly—
that lamb begins to know the shepherd’s voice better than any other.

When he calls, it runs.
Because it’s not just rescued.
It’s known.
It’s wanted.
It’s his.

Jesus said it plainly:
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me… and no one will snatch them out of My hand.” (John 10:27-28)

There are days I also feel like a bummer lamb.
Days when I question my belonging.
When I ache with the weight of being too much for some and not enough for others.
But then I remember—
the Good Shepherd came for the rejected,
the overlooked,
the fragile and frayed.

And He didn’t just save us.
He stayed with us.

So if you’re limping through today, wondering if you’ve been left behind—
you haven’t.
You’re not lost.
You’re not forgotten.

You’re held.
Forever and always, a bummer lamb…
cradled in the arms of the Shepherd
who has brought you in, adopted you as His and calls you His own.
I wrote With All Joy years ago while expecting my I wrote With All Joy years ago while expecting my seventh baby—right in the thick of toddler years having 5 kids 6yrs and under.

It was born out of the question I get asked more than any other:
“How do you do it?!”

If I were just passing you in Costco, I’d probably share my most heartfelt smile and give my usual quick reply:
“Oh, I’m just getting by like every other mom.”

But if we had a chance to sit down for coffee—heart to heart—I could talk to you for hours…errrrr….DAYS….about the little systems, intentional rhythms, joyful cues and purposeful teaching that have made motherhood not just manageable, but meaningful.

This video gives you just a taste: things like “woop!” and “find your spot” and our “mama ducks” are playful, memorable ways I’ve trained my kids to respond quickly with joy and purpose.

These aren’t just tricks—they’re amazing tools! And oh how helpful they have been through the years!

These are simple, intentional, life-giving tools that help bring peace to your home, joy to your journey, and dignity to both you and your children.

Because here’s what I’ve learned:
There is joy in obedience.

And there is deep, soul-filling joy in the gift of getting to be their mama.

I poured every bit of my heart into my book. With All Joy isn’t just a theory. It’s the real-life framework I have lived and continue to live out daily, shared with the hope of helping moms like you lead your homes with confidence, clarity, and joy.

I’ve had the honor of speaking across the country about this message—and I pray daily for more and more opportunity as there is nothing like watching lightbulbs go on in a mama’s eyes when she realizes:
“I can actually do this! And I can do it with joy!”

“Enemies help keep the Lord’s servants awake.” — Spurgeon

It’s a strange mercy, isn’t it?
The way resistance can sharpen us.
How opposition—though unwanted—can somehow keep our hearts from going numb.
When everyone agrees with you, it’s easy to get comfortable.
Easy to coast.
Easy to start living for applause instead of obedience.

But the presence of enemies?
That’ll keep you praying.
That’ll keep you clinging.
That’ll wake you up in the night not with panic, but with desperation for His presence, His voice, His leading.

And maybe that’s the point.

Sometimes it’s the thorn that keeps you on your knees.
Sometimes it’s the betrayal that sends you back to the secret place.
Sometimes it’s the wound that makes you seek the Healer more earnestly than ever before.

God doesn’t waste even our experiences with our our enemies.
They, too, can be a gift.

They remind us we’re not home yet.
They refine what we really believe.
And they drive us to deeper dependence.

So if the resistance is strong,
take heart.

It may just mean you’re still awake.
Still in the fight.

Stay steady…and take heart…keep following the One who walked through every kind of hostility with eyes fixed on the joy set before Him.
We don’t say it out loud, but it lives just b We don’t say it out loud,
but it lives just beneath the surface.
This quiet, trembling fear:
“If I obey Him,
if I’m faithful to what He’s asking…
will He really come through for me?”

We know He’s Provider in theory.
We’ve seen it in stories.
Heard it in sermons.
Quoted it to others.

But when it’s our turn to let go of the plan,
our finances,
our timeline,
our preferences,
we grip tight.
Just in case.

But here’s the mystery—
God rarely builds our trust through comfort.
He often builds it through need.
Through waiting.
Through the ache of not having and still believing.

Because dependency is not a punishment.
It’s an invitation.
A call to remember that the safest place to be
isn’t where we have all the answers,
but where we have Him.

So if it feels like the ground is giving way beneath you—
you’re not being abandoned.
You’re being anchored.

He will provide.

Maybe not the way you imagined,
but in a way that shapes you
into someone who no longer needs to be afraid.
